In the context of AT, mediation is a process to resolve disagreements between parents and school personnel. It is provided at no cost to the family or the school district. Both parties must agree to mediation. A neutral trained mediator facilitates the meeting to help both parties resolve their disagreements. Mediation is more structured than conciliation but less formal than a due process hearing. The most recent revision of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) strongly encourages the use of mediation.
